Ridge and slope streets
Many streets follow the tops of ridges or the contours of slopes. They draw long curving lines across the map instead of a regular grid.

Bento Gonçalves Map Poster & Print
Bento Gonçalves lies in the Serra Gaúcha, the mountainous region of north-eastern Rio Grande do Sul. The city is built across a series of ridges and valleys, and its street plan bends constantly to follow the slopes. Straight blocks appear only on the flatter ground of the centre. Elsewhere, roads follow the contours and switch back down to the valley floors.
Italian immigrants, mostly from the Veneto, settled the area from the 1870s and brought winemaking with them. Today Bento Gonçalves is often called Brazil's wine capital. The nearby Vale dos Vinhedos was the first Brazilian wine region to receive a geographical indication. The city is also a major centre of the furniture industry.
A Bento Gonçalves map poster captures how the hills shape the city: tight curving roads, the denser centre, and rural lanes that run out between the vineyards. In a single colour, the pattern looks almost like a drawing of the terrain itself, which is a fair description of how the city came to be.

Vale dos Vinhedos
Just outside the city lies the valley of vineyards and wineries. There the map shows scattered buildings and winding rural roads instead of urban blocks.
The compact centre
On the flatter ground at the heart of the city, the streets form a denser and more regular grid. It is the one place where the terrain allows straight lines.

Dlaczego Bento Gonçalves
Mapa, która coś znaczy
Many families of Italian descent in southern Brazil feel a strong attachment to Bento Gonçalves, and so do visitors who come for the grape harvest. A map poster of its winding streets makes a thoughtful gift or a reminder of a trip through the Serra.
You can edit the title, subtitle and coordinates to add a date or the name of a winery. There are five styles to choose from. Sand and Paper suit the warm tones of wine country, while Classic black & white, Noir and Blueprint look more graphic.
