Hungund lies in Bagalkot district in northern Karnataka, on the broad, dry plateau of the Deccan. From above, the town is a dense core of irregular lanes surrounded by long field boundaries and scattered outcrops of rock. Main roads leave in several directions, and newer building has spread along them, so the outline looks more like a star than a circle.
The town gives its name to a taluk that also contains the temple village of Aihole, famous for its early Chalukya stone temples, and the historic sites of Pattadakal and Badami are not far off. Hungund itself is a working market town, but the region is one of the most important in India for the history of temple architecture.
