Landsberg am Lech is built on the east bank of the Lech, where the old town climbs a steep slope up from the river. On a map this makes a striking layout: a dense cluster of streets squeezed between the water and the hillside, with lanes stepping up to the medieval walls and towers. The river is one of the town's signatures. The Lechwehr, a broad weir right beside the old town, crosses the channel as a pale band of falling water, and a mill stream runs alongside the houses.
