Mérida was founded in 25 BC as Augusta Emerita, a colony for veterans of Augustus's legions, and the Roman plan still shapes the map. The historic centre sits on the north bank of the Guadiana, a broad river scattered with islands and reed beds. The old streets are tight and slightly irregular, with a few squares opening between them, while later districts spread outward in looser blocks.
The river is the main feature of any view from above. The Roman bridge, one of the longest surviving from antiquity, crosses it in a long, low line, and modern bridges, including Santiago Calatrava's Lusitania Bridge, sit alongside. The smaller Albarregas stream joins from the north, passing another Roman bridge and the remains of an aqueduct on its way.
