Palmerston North sits on the Manawatū Plains in the lower North Island. From above it is one of New Zealand's most orderly inland cities. Straight streets radiate and cross around The Square, a large green space at the centre of town, and the grid continues in every direction until it meets farmland. The regularity is easy to see even at small scale.
Along the southern edge, the Manawatū River bends past the city with wide berms and walkways. The Victoria Esplanade gardens lie beside it. Massey University's main campus is on the far bank, so the river forms a boundary between the city and the university. To the east, the land rises toward the Ruahine and Tararua ranges, and wind turbines stand along the ridgelines.
