Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco, sits on low, flat ground where rivers meet, and water is everywhere on its map. The Grijalva River runs along the eastern side of the historic centre, and the Carrizal curves around the west. The low terrain has left the city open to flooding, most severely in 2007, and embankments now line long stretches of the rivers. Villahermosa is also a centre of the oil industry in the Gulf region.
