Abony lies in the south-east of Pest County, where the Great Hungarian Plain opens out towards the Tisza. There is almost no relief here, so the town's shape comes from roads, the railway and the edges of fields. From above it reads as a broad, low settlement whose streets have grown outward over time instead of climbing or curving around terrain.
The main line between Budapest and Szolnok passes through the town, and on a map it shows as one long, confident stroke against the softer street pattern.
