Achim lies in the district of Verden in Lower Saxony, a short distance southeast of Bremen. The town sits on the edge of the Weser lowlands. From above, open marshland and meadows with drainage ditches stretch toward the river on one side, while on the other the ground rises gently toward sandy heath and woodland. Achim's closeness to Bremen has shaped its growth.
