Ada is the seat of Pontotoc County in south-central Oklahoma. On a map it shows the classic outline of a Plains town. A regular grid of streets surrounds a downtown core, and it loosens into larger lots and curving residential streets toward the edges. Highways enter from several directions and give the plan firm diagonal and straight lines.
East Central University occupies a campus within the town. Its paths and buildings create a distinct patch on the map. Ada is also home to the headquarters of the Chickasaw Nation, which gives the town an importance well beyond its size. Around the town, open country and scattered rural roads fill the frame.
