Afşin sits in the northern part of Kahramanmaraş Province, on the broad upland plain it shares with neighbouring Elbistan. The elevation is high and the land is largely flat, so the town's streets spread without much interference from terrain. On a map this produces a fairly open pattern: a central core, main roads leading out across the plain, and newer districts forming blocks at the edges.
The name is widely known in Turkey through the Afşin-Elbistan energy complex, which draws on the lignite deposits of the surrounding basin. Afşin is also associated with Eshab-ı Kehf, a site linked to the story of the Seven Sleepers, which draws visitors to a hillside complex outside the town. Both give the district a recognition beyond its size.
The region was among those affected by the February 2023 earthquakes, and parts of the town have been rebuilding since.
