Águas Formosas is in the northeast of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in hilly inland country near the border with Bahia. Its name means beautiful waters, a reference to the streams in the area. From above, the town sits in a valley. The central streets follow the low ground, while newer streets climb the surrounding slopes.
Because of the terrain, the plan is not a strict grid. Streets bend to follow contours and waterways, and the town has a more organic outline than the planned settlements of southern Brazil.
