Aihara lies in the northern part of Kanagawa Prefecture, within the Sagamihara area and close to the boundary with Tokyo. On a map it appears as a patchwork of residential streets, small fields and wooded slopes, where the dense suburbs of western Tokyo begin to give way to the hills that rise toward the Tanzawa mountains.
The Sakai River, which marks much of the border between Kanagawa and Tokyo in this area, winds past the district, and its course gives the map a natural dividing line.
