Aklūj lies in Solapur district in southern Maharashtra, on the bank of the Nira River. Seen from above, the town is shaped by the water on one side and farmland on the others. The older part forms a tight cluster of lanes near the river, while wider roads carry traffic out to neighbouring villages and market towns across the plain.
The region is sugarcane country, and cooperative sugar industry has long been central to its economy. On a map, the effect shows in the long straight roads between large fields, and in the processing sites and residential colonies built beyond the old centre. Aklūj is also known for its hilltop fort, which has been restored with sculptures on the life of Shivaji.
