Al-Hamdaniya, also known as Bakhdida or Qaraqosh, lies on the Nineveh Plains southeast of Mosul in northern Iraq. The land around it is flat and farmed. On a map the town stands out as a compact, dense mass of streets, with roads and field boundaries fanning out across the plain.
It is one of the largest Syriac Christian towns in Iraq, and its large churches are central landmarks. The town was emptied during the conflict of 2014 to 2016, and since then many families have returned and rebuilt homes and churches.
