Al Ḩayy is a town in Wasit Governorate in eastern Iraq. It lies on the Shatt al-Gharraf, a channel that leaves the Tigris near Kut and runs south across the plain. The waterway passes through the town and is the main organising line on the map, with streets on both banks and bridges between them.
The land is completely flat, typical of central and southern Mesopotamia. Irrigation has shaped it for a very long time. Around the town, canals branch off the Gharraf and form a network of straight and curving lines, with palm groves and fields between them. The built area is compact, with a denser centre near the water and newer blocks spreading outward.
