Al Khawr lies on the north-east coast of Qatar, about fifty kilometres north of Doha. Its name refers to the sheltered inlet around which the town grew. On a map, the bay and its lagoon shallows form an irregular shoreline, and newer residential districts spread inland in regular blocks.
Al Khawr was historically a fishing and pearling town. Today it is a municipal centre linked to Doha by a major highway. It gained international attention as the site of Al Bayt Stadium, built for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, whose distinctive form sits on the edge of town.
