Al Minshāh lies on the west bank of the Nile in Sohag Governorate, in Upper Egypt. Its map is defined by the river on one side and by the narrow strip of irrigated land that follows it. The town stands on the site of Ptolemais Hermiou, a Greek city founded under Ptolemy I that served as an important administrative centre in Upper Egypt during the Ptolemaic period.
