Alchevsk lies in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine, in the heart of the Donbas coal and steel belt. The city grew around an iron and steel works founded in the 1890s. On the map, the plant occupies a large, dense area next to the residential districts, crossed by railway sidings.
The streets are mostly straight and regular, with broad avenues and large blocks of mid-century apartment buildings. Parks and small reservoirs break up the pattern. Around the edges, the land turns into steppe with ravines, farmland and the spoil heaps typical of the mining region.
The city is named after Alexei Alchevsky, a nineteenth-century industrialist, and carried other names during the Soviet period. Since 2014 it has been outside Ukrainian government control.
