Alīgarh lies in western Uttar Pradesh, on the flat plain between the Ganges and the Yamuna. The land is almost level, so the city's shape comes from roads, railways and institutions rather than terrain. On the map an old town of tightly packed lanes sits on one side of the railway, and the more open grounds of the university and civil lines sit on the other.
The city is known across India for Aligarh Muslim University, which began in 1875 as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College founded by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Alīgarh is also famous for lock-making, a trade carried on in many small workshops. Aligarh Fort, rebuilt in the eighteenth century, stands north of the city and was taken by British forces in 1803.
