Altoona Map Poster & Print
Altoona lies in Blair County, central Pennsylvania, in a valley at the foot of the Allegheny Front. The map follows the terrain. The city is long and narrow along the valley floor, its street grid is aligned with the railroad through its centre, and neighbourhoods climb the hillsides on either side.
The Pennsylvania Railroad founded the city in 1849 as a base for crossing the mountains, and it grew into one of the largest railroad shop complexes in the world. West of town, the Horseshoe Curve carries the main line around a tight bend up the slope. It is a landmark of American railroad engineering.
An Altoona map poster makes the railroad's influence plain. The broad band of tracks and yards cuts through the city, the street grid lines up with it, and the ridges to the west limit how far the city can spread. It is a strong industrial composition with a clear sense of direction.

Horseshoe Curve
West of the city, the main line loops around a valley in a tight horseshoe to climb the Allegheny Front. It is a distinctive curve at wider framings.
Hillside neighbourhoods
Residential streets climb the slopes on both sides of the valley. Their grids bend and break where the ground becomes too steep.
