Roads run out in long straight lines to neighbouring towns, and the countryside around is a patchwork of small properties, tracks and seasonal watercourses.
This part of Bahia is known for growing sisal, a hardy plant that tolerates long dry seasons, and for small-scale farming and livestock. The map reflects that dispersed rural life: beyond the town, settlement is scattered along roads and tracks, with small reservoirs and ponds dotting the land where water is stored.
