Armentières lies in the far north of France on the River Lys, which marks the Belgian border just outside town. The river runs along the northern side of the centre, and canals, old channels and waterside parks follow its course. Streets fan out from the central square in the dense, brick-built pattern typical of French Flanders and the Lille area.
The town was almost completely destroyed in the First World War and rebuilt in the 1920s, which is why its centre looks so consistent. The town hall belfry, rebuilt after the war, belongs to the UNESCO-listed Belfries of Belgium and France.
