Auburn lies in the valley of the Green River in King County, Washington, roughly halfway between Seattle and Tacoma. From above, the city divides in two. The flat valley floor holds the older downtown grid, the rail yards and large industrial parks, while residential streets climb onto the plateaus to the east and west.
The Green River winds across the valley in loose meanders, and the White River joins from the south. Highway 18 and State Route 167 cross the city, and long freight rail lines run north to south. The Muckleshoot Indian Reservation borders the city to the southeast.
