Awara is a city in northern Fukui Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast near the border with Ishikawa. The map shows a mix of landscapes: a straight coastline along the sea, the lagoon lake Kitagata-ko on the northern edge, and wide, flat rice fields crossed by roads and small channels between them.
The city is best known for Awara Onsen, a hot-spring resort that developed after hot water was found in the area in the late nineteenth century. Its cluster of ryokan and streets forms a distinct centre on the map. In 2024 the Hokuriku Shinkansen reached Awara-Onsen Station, linking the town directly to the high-speed network.
