Az Zulfī is in the northern part of the Riyadh Region, in the Najd plateau of central Arabia. From above, the town stretches along a shallow valley. Newer districts on wide, regular blocks spread out from an older core, and main roads run in long straight lines towards the desert highways that link it with Riyadh and Qassim.
The land around it sets the map's character. Rocky escarpment country rises on one side, and on the other a belt of sand dunes crosses the landscape in soft, parallel ridges. Date palm plantations and farms fill in the gaps between neighbourhoods, and they appear on the map as small green, orderly plots.
