Back Bay Map Poster & Print
Back Bay is one of the clearest examples of a planned neighbourhood in any American city. Until the mid-1800s it was a tidal basin of the Charles River, and the land was created by filling the flats with gravel brought in by rail. The result on a map is unmistakable: long parallel avenues running east to west, crossed at regular intervals by shorter streets.
Those cross streets run in alphabetical order, from Arlington, Berkeley and Clarendon through to Hereford, a detail locals use to navigate and visitors often notice only after a few blocks.
