Bada Barabīl, usually known as Barbil, lies in Keonjhar district in northern Odisha, close to the border with Jharkhand. It sits in hilly country, and on a map the town is a loose network of streets in a valley surrounded by forested ridges. Roads and railway sidings run out toward the hills, where mining activity has reshaped the land.
The area is one of India's major iron-ore belts, and mining and transport have driven the town's growth.
