Its map changed significantly after the Almatti Dam was built downstream on the Krishna: rising backwaters submerged parts of the old town, and a planned new town, Navanagar, was built on higher ground nearby. The result is two distinct street patterns sitting side by side.
The older part of Bagalkot has irregular lanes that follow the land by the river, while Navanagar is laid out in a clear grid of sectors and wide roads. The district is also known for its heritage: the rock-cut temples of Badami, and the early Chalukya temples of Aihole and Pattadakal, all lie within easy reach.
