Bagua Grande sits in the valley of the Utcubamba River in Peru's Amazonas region, where the Andes begin to drop towards the Amazon lowlands. On a map, the town is stretched out, not round. It follows the valley floor and the main road through it, with blocks packed between the river and the rising ground. Its outline comes from its setting.
The town is the capital of Utcubamba province and a working centre for the surrounding farmland. Much of the flat valley around it is cultivated, and rice fields form a patchwork of small, regular plots that look almost geometric from above.
