Balıkesir lies in Turkey's Marmara region, on a farming plain between the Aegean coast and the interior. The map shows a dense centre of irregular streets around the older mosques and market areas. Broader avenues and newer housing blocks surround it and extend across the flat ground, and the main roads leave the city toward İzmir, Bursa and Çanakkale.
The city played an important part in the early Turkish War of Independence, when regional congresses held here in 1919 and 1920 organised local resistance. Its centre includes the fifteenth-century Zağanos Pasha Mosque and a clock tower that serves as a familiar landmark. The wider province reaches two coasts, but the city itself is firmly inland.
