Balrāmpur lies on the plains of eastern Uttar Pradesh, not far from the border with Nepal. The town's older streets and markets form a dense centre. Around it are larger compounds, ponds and open grounds, and farmland stretches in every direction. On a clear day, the first ranges of the Himalayan foothills can be seen to the north.
The town was the seat of the Balrampur estate, one of the larger landholdings in Awadh during British rule. Its rulers funded public institutions, and the well-known Balrampur Hospital in Lucknow bears the town's name. The district also includes Devipatan in Tulsipur, an important temple site for Hindu pilgrims.
