Balș lies in Olt County, in the Oltenia region of southern Romania, on the Olteț River. The town sits on relatively flat ground, and its map shows a central area with several main roads radiating outward, surrounded by residential streets and then the agricultural fields typical of the plain.
The Olteț runs past the town as a slender, winding line, and the road and rail connections toward Craiova and Slatina leave Balș in different directions. These routes give the map a set of strong axes, framing the smaller streets that fill the space between them.
