Balsas lies in the south of Maranhão state in north-eastern Brazil, on the river of the same name, a tributary of the Parnaíba. On the map, the Rio Balsas curves through the town, with bridges and the older quarters near its banks. Newer neighbourhoods spread out in wide grids on the higher ground.
Over recent decades Balsas has become one of the main centres of Brazil's agricultural frontier in the cerrado. The land around the town shows this clearly: huge rectangular fields of soy and other crops, separated by long straight roads. Strips of native vegetation follow the watercourses.
