Baraúna is a municipality in the west of Rio Grande do Norte, in the semi-arid interior of northeastern Brazil, not far from the border with Ceará and the larger city of Mossoró. The town sits on the flat limestone plateau known as the Chapada do Apodi. From above, it appears as a compact grid of streets surrounded by open, level land.
The surrounding area has become known for irrigated agriculture, particularly fruit farming, and on a map this shows as large, regularly shaped plots crossed by straight tracks.
