Barranqueras lies on the eastern edge of the Resistencia metropolitan area in Chaco Province, where the land meets a channel of the Paraná River system. It serves as the province's river port, and from above its docks and waterfront sit where a regular urban grid ends and a maze of floodplain water begins.
The town merges into Resistencia to the west, so its streets continue the capital's grid without an obvious break. To the east and south, lagoons, marshes and side channels form a shifting pattern of islands, with the main river and the city of Corrientes on the far side.
