Bauru lies in the interior of São Paulo state, on gently rolling ground far from the coast. From above, it is a large, mostly regular grid of residential blocks, broken by valleys with small streams and by the lines of several highways that meet here. The rail corridors that shaped the city early on still cut through it.
The centre is laid out in a clear checkerboard pattern. Newer districts spread outward in varied grids that meet at slight angles, so the outer city reads as a patchwork. Green strips along the creeks and a few larger parks break up the regular blocks.
Bauru grew as a railway junction in the early twentieth century and later became a university and service centre. It gave its name to the bauru, a well-known Brazilian sandwich, and it is where Pelé grew up and started playing football.
