Békés lies on the Great Hungarian Plain, a short distance north of Békéscsaba. The town gave its name to the county, and its layout is typical of the region's old market towns: broad streets, deep house plots and a loose, generous pattern that covers far more ground than the population alone would suggest. On a map the whole town feels low and widely spaced.
Water shapes Békés more than anything else. The Kettős-Körös river runs close by, and old channels and backwaters curve around parts of the town. Flood levees follow the river as long, deliberate lines through otherwise flat country. Together, the curving water and the straight embankments give the plain a structure it would otherwise lack.
