Bek’ojī lies in the Arsi Zone of Oromia, in the Ethiopian highlands, at an altitude of roughly 2,800 metres. The town is modest in size. On the map, a few main roads and a simple street network are surrounded by farmland and open highland country. Tracks and paths reach outward toward the fields and villages around it.
The town is famous far beyond its size as the home of an extraordinary number of world-class long-distance runners. Olympic champions Kenenisa Bekele, Tirunesh Dibaba and Derartu Tulu all come from Bek’ojī or its immediate surroundings.
