Belgorod stands in southwestern Russia, on the Seversky Donets and its tributary the Vezelka, in rolling country of chalk hills. The name means white town, a reference to those pale slopes. On a map the two river valleys cut soft, green channels through the city, and the neighbourhoods rise on either side of them in terraces of streets.
The town began in the late sixteenth century as a fortress on the southern frontier of the Russian state, but little of that early layout survives. Much of today's centre was rebuilt after the Second World War, which gives it wide, straight avenues, large squares and a clear hierarchy of roads leading out towards the surrounding region.
The region is closely associated with the 1943 Battle of Kursk; the tank battle at Prokhorovka was fought not far to the north. Post-war avenues
Rebuilt after 1945, the central district is laid out with long, straight avenues and generous squares, giving the map a strong, orderly structure at the middle of the city.

Around the centre the ground rises into the chalk hills that gave Belgorod its name, and the streets bend to follow slopes, gullies and the edges of the river terraces.
