Belkovsky Island lies off the northern coast of Siberia in the Laptev Sea, to the west of Kotelny Island in the New Siberian archipelago. It is uninhabited, with low hills and plains and a coastline that curves in broad, simple lines. Sea ice covers the surrounding water for most of the year, and from above the island looks compact and self-contained.
The island takes its name from the merchant Belkov, who reached it in the early nineteenth century, an era when traders explored these islands for fossil mammoth ivory. Today it belongs to one of the most remote regions of the Russian Arctic, visited mainly by scientists and the occasional expedition, and it has no permanent population.
