Belvidere is the county seat of Boone County in northern Illinois, east of Rockford. From above, the Kishwaukee River winds through the city, with a traditional Midwestern grid of streets on either side. Rail lines and main roads cross the town, and newer neighbourhoods and farmland extend outward over the flat prairie.
The city is best known for its large automobile assembly plant, which for decades gave Belvidere an outsized role in the region's industry. The plant's extensive site and car parks appear as a large, distinct block on the map, very different from the fine grid of the older streets.
