Benthuizen is a village in South Holland, part of the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn and close to Zoetermeer. It sits in classic Dutch polder country, and the map shows this with unusual clarity. Long narrow fields stretch away from the village, divided by parallel ditches that form a fine, regular pattern of lines.
The village itself is compact, with an older core along its main street and newer residential neighbourhoods laid out around it.
