Betroka is in the Anosy region of southern Madagascar, on the high, open grassland that separates the central plateau from the dry south. On a map the town is a small, compact cluster. A handful of streets meet around a centre, with the main road passing through, and wide open country surrounds it on every side.
The region is cattle country, and towns like Betroka have long served as markets and stopping places on the routes between the highlands and the south coast.
