Bhavnagar stands on the eastern side of the Saurashtra peninsula in Gujarat, facing the Gulf of Khambhat. It was founded in the 1720s by Bhavsinhji Gohil as the capital of a princely state, and it grew into an important port for cotton and other goods. The tidal waters of the gulf have always shaped the city's relationship with the sea.
On a map the eastern edge dissolves into creeks, mudflats and salt pans, where land and water are hard to separate.
