Bījār lies on a high plateau in Kurdistan Province in western Iran, surrounded by wide, treeless uplands. From above, the town reads as a dense, fairly compact knot of streets. Outside it, roads run long and straight across open country towards neighbouring towns and villages, and the contrast is sharp.
The name is known well beyond Iran because of the Bijar rug. These carpets are woven so tightly that they are often called the iron rugs of Persia.
