Blagodarnyy is a district town in Stavropol Krai in southern Russia, set in the open steppe that stretches east of Stavropol. The land is flat to gently rolling and heavily farmed. On the map the town appears as a well-ordered grid of long blocks, with straight streets running between low houses and gardens.
The surrounding countryside repeats that geometry on a larger scale. Big rectangular fields, shelter belts of trees and straight farm roads fill the space around the town, so that from above it is hard to see exactly where the settlement ends.
