Bloomington is a college town in the hills of southern Indiana. Its downtown is a classic Midwestern grid laid out around the Monroe County Courthouse square. East of downtown the grid gives way to the curving paths, woods and quads of Indiana University's main campus, which takes up a large share of the map.
Kirkwood Avenue links the two, running from the square to the Sample Gates at the campus entrance. The B-Line Trail follows an old rail corridor through the west side of downtown. Beyond the town, wooded hills, Griffy Lake to the north and the long reservoir of Lake Monroe to the south fill in the countryside.
The land around Bloomington is limestone country, and local quarries supplied stone for many well-known buildings. The 1979 film Breaking Away was set here and drew on that quarrying history.
