Bossier City lies on the east bank of the Red River in northwest Louisiana, directly across from Shreveport. From above the river defines everything. It winds between the two cities in wide bends, crossed by several bridges, and Bossier's streets spread east from the bank in a mix of older grids and newer suburban layouts.
A large part of the city's map is taken up by Barksdale Air Force Base, home to B-52 bombers. It appears as a vast, open area with long runways, noticeably different from the residential streets around it. The riverfront is known for its casinos and entertainment complexes, which line the eastern bank.
