Bowie is the largest city in Prince George's County, Maryland, set between Washington and Annapolis. From above it is a classic postwar suburb: curving roads, loops and cul-de-sacs laid out in neighbourhood sections, with wooded stream valleys and parks threading between them and major highways marking the edges.
Much of the city grew from Belair at Bowie, a large development built by Levitt and Sons beginning in the 1960s on land that had been part of the Belair estate. The eighteenth-century Belair Mansion and the nearby stable, once home to famous racehorses, still stand among the neighbourhoods.
