Boxtel lies in North Brabant between 's-Hertogenbosch, Tilburg and Eindhoven, and the small river Dommel shapes much of its map. The river meanders through town in loose, irregular curves, and many older streets bend to follow it. The compact historic centre sits close to the water, with the market square and the Sint-Petrus basilica at its heart.
Kasteel Stapelen, set beside the Dommel near the centre, appears as a compact cluster of buildings and water among the surrounding streets. The railway runs close by in a long straight line, and the station once served as the starting point of the Boxtel–Wesel line toward Germany, which made the town an early rail junction.
